KUMBALANGI STORIES
KUMBALANGI
Kumbalangi is an island village near Kochi. Kumbalangi became famous after the release of Malayalam film Kumbalangi nights stared by Shane Nigam, directed by Madhu C Narayanan. Magical Glow (kavaru) in the backwaters of Kumbalangi is one of its main attraction. The light emitted by microorganisms like fungi and bacteria in backwaters causes this magical glow (kavaru). When a part of the reservoir glows up fish in that area moves out resulting in poor fishing. The people of Kumbalangi relies mainly on fishing for their livelihood; nowadays tourism is also providing them with some sort of livelihood. Cochin natives can easily reach here to refresh themselves because Kochi is just 7 km away from Kumbalangi. The city people who came here will surely get a divine feeling for sure. Kumbalangi is a favourite spot for photographers. The pictures of many migratory birds from here went viral on social media platforms. In my personal opinion, this is a good one day trip destination for residents of Ernakulum district and nearby districts.
MY EXPERIENCE
One day my friend asked me shall we go on a trip. Though I love travelling I did not say okay due to the Covid pandemic situation at first. When he mentioned the spot I got excited and said okay. Kumbalangi was one of my dream spots after releasing the film Kumbalangi nights. The beauty of Kumbalangi on the theatre screen fascinated me. We started our journey at 10 am morning. Keeping covid protocol in mind we took some sort of foodstuff with us. My friends Toyota Liva was our travel companion. We choose a car for our journey due to heavy traffic in the Ernakulam area. (It's not that safe for a noob rider to ride trough Ernakulam) We reached there afternoon. The beauty of this village made our minds relaxed. Almost every nook and corner of this small village is a good frame for photography. We visited the places where the film Kumbalangi nights was shoot. We talked to native people there. They are simple chaps leading village life. Their language had Kochin slang, most of them rely on fishing for their livelihood. Though we wished to see Kavaru natives said that this is not the season, that was some sort of disappointment. Expecting to see Kavaru on our next visit we returned with heartfelt joy.
